Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 8.2 million deaths in 2012. There were an estimated 14.1 million cancer cases around the world in 2012, of these 7.4 million cases were in men and 6.7 million in women. This number is expected to increase to 24 million by 2035.
The most common causes of cancer death are cancers of:
- lung (1.59 million deaths)
- liver (745 000 deaths)
- stomach (723 000 deaths)
- colorectal (694 000 deaths)
- breast (521 000 deaths)
- oesophageal cancer (400 000 deaths).
No other diseases are more terrifying than cancer. If you think HIV or AIDS is frightening, think again. Cancer is more frightening than HIV or AIDS.
So, what is cancer?
One defining feature of cancer is the rapid creation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual boundaries, and which can then invade adjoining parts of the body and spread to other organs. This process is referred to as metastasis. Metastases are the major cause of death from cancer.
The normal cells is our body multiply for repair and replacement of damaged or old cells. When the multiplication does not stop we have ‘cancer’.
How many types of cancer?
We have more than 200 types of cells in the human body. Therefore, there are more than 200 types of cancers.
Symptoms of Cancer
Symptoms vary according to organ affected. In its early stages, cancer may have no symptoms, but eventually a malignant tumor will grow large enough to be detected.
As it continues to grow, it may press on nerves and produce pain, penetrate blood vessels and cause bleeding, or interfere with the function of a body organ or system. Pain is not a common symptom till quite late. Most of the time ‘no symptoms’ and discovered accidentally or when late symptoms appear. When the symptoms do appear, mostly can detected scan, blood test, etc… and confirmation by biopsy.
Next step, treatment
Depending on the type and stage of cancer, cancer treatment requires a careful selection of one or more intervention, such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The goal is to cure the disease or considerably prolong life while improving the patient’s quality of life.
Incidence rates of cancers
Cancer is a major public health problem in the United States and many other parts of the world.
One in 4 deaths in the United States is due to cancer.
In Singapore, it is 1 in 4
In Malaysia, it is 1 in 6
Cure cancer
Early detection
Cancer mortality can be reduced if cases are detected and treated early. There are two components of early detection efforts:
Early diagnosis
The awareness of early signs and symptoms (for cancer types such as cervical, breast colorectal and oral) in order to get them diagnosed and treated early before the disease becomes advanced. Early diagnosis programmes are particularly relevant in low-resource settings where the majority of patients are diagnosed in very late stages and where there is no screening.
Screening
Screening is defined as the systematic application of a test in an asymptomatic population. It aims to identify individuals with abnormalities suggestive of a specific cancer or pre-cancer and refer them promptly for diagnosis and treatment. Screening programmes are especially effective for frequent cancer types for which a cost-effective, affordable, acceptable and accessible screening test is available to the majority of the population at risk.
Causes of cancer
Til today, we still don’t know the causes of cancer. Many theories related to genetic, hormonal, etc…
Why the sudden increase over the last century?
There are not much changes in air, water, foods, etc… Lifestyles changes a lot? Yes but not significant.
Only major change is the introduction of chemicals in the environment. There are more than 100,000 chemicals since early 1900.
Most identifiable cause of cancer is exposure to chemicals.
Prevention
- reduce exposure to chemicals
- reduce body weight
- drink plenty of clean water
- consume full range of minerals and antioxidants**
- adequate sleep
Here, I am focus more on consume full range of minerals and antioxidants.
Vemma—an acronym for Vitamins Essential Minerals Mangosteen and Aloe—boasts a wide range of health properties, backed by double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials conducted by Brunswick Laboratories in Norton, MA. The liquid vitamin and mineral supplement carries a high ORAC value, which stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. Ronald Prior, the scientist who helped create the ORAC test, recommends you consume at least 3,500 ORAC units daily for optimum health. Vemma contains 115,000 ORAC units.
Vemma contains 12 full spectrum vitamins, including beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin D3, and B vitamins 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12, and enough antioxidant power to minimize oxidation in your body.
